Against Goliath

Against Goliath
Against Goliath

"David also said, 'The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.' And Saul said to David, 'Go, and may the Lord be with you!' (1 Samuel, ch. 17, v. 37*).

The brief encounter between David and Goliath is more than a battle between Israel and the Philistines. It is a defense of Jehovah's name against those who bring doubt upon Him. As David notes, the only way a boy with a sling can defeat a mighty warrior like Goliath is through God's hand. And that is exactly what happens.

By facing Goliath, David shows true courage and faith. But we see that what drives him to take action is righteous indignation: 'What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes Israel’s disgrace? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?' (1 Samuel, ch. 17, v. 26*). David believes that someone must respond to the reproach brought on by Goliath's offensive words. Since no one else steps forward, he voluntarily takes on the task to defend Jehovah's name.

At one time or another, we too may find ourselves in a position where we are challenged to stand up for God's name. In such a moment, will fear hold us back and silence us? Or will we proclaim God's name as He has called and equipped us to do? Our 'smooth stones' (v. 40) are the truths of God's word. Whatever the outcome, the battle is the Lord’s, and He grants victory to the faithful.
