“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters; He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for His name's sake” (Psalm 23:1-3*).
- How much is enough? – a journalist once asked John D. Rockefeller, the founder of the Standard Oil company.
- Just a little bit more. – replied Rockefeller.
While few have access to the opportunities of vast wealth, we all face the same question. Our world is obsessed with getting more, spending more, doing more. But at the root of an answer like Rockefeller’s lies a misunderstanding of the Giver.
David understands that everything is from the Lord. "I shall not want" – he writes in Psalm 23:1*. In other words, because he belongs to God, nothing will be lacking in his life.
We can think about this issue in two ways. The first is to expect the Lord to give us everything we think we need, and when we don't get it, to look for someone to blame. But, as Christ and His followers reveal to us, there is a second approach: to accept with gratitude what God has provided for us and to allow Him to change our hearts. In this way, even our needs will depend on our submission to Him.
Reading Psalm 23:1 should immediately remind us of John 10:11*, where Christ says: “I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.” The transformative truth of the gospel is that we have more than enough because Christ gave Himself for us.
