"Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers" (Eph. 4:9*).
What words or manner of speaking contribute to love, joy, and peace in my life?
Firstly, we should speak words of encouragement. When someone tells me I'm doing a good job, that I'm managing well, or that I've accomplished something important, their words empower me to do even more good things.
Secondly, sincere compliments aid in our development. When people say that I've answered their question wisely, that my example has inspired them, or that I have somehow been the reason for a change in their life's direction, I rejoice, knowing that the Lord is working through me.
Thirdly, gratitude should always be a part of our vocabulary. Read the introductory verses in the letters of Apostle Paul. Often, after wishing them grace and peace, he thanks God for them. The church in Corinth faced several issues, yet the apostle expresses gratitude for their spiritual gifts. He encourages believers with the promises of God's faithfulness.
Who might be in need of your encouragement, a compliment, or a word of gratitude? Perhaps your partner, child, boss, subordinate, a politician, a church leader or member, or perhaps the clerk at the local store? Don't let the day end without telling them what they need to hear.
