"See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland" (Isaiah 43:19*).
I hadn't organized my wardrobe in years, and it had turned into a time capsule containing several phases of my life. Here were the office suits I had worn decades ago as a professional. Wearing them made me feel successful. They still fit me, but now I had no occasion to wear them. On one shelf stood my late husband Jerry's suitcase, which he used on many of his travels. I had my own, so why was I keeping his? Many other personal items in my closet reminded me of the years spent together with Jerry.
It had been fifteen years since I retired and nearly a decade since my husband passed away. And yet, I still couldn't let go of the past. I knew I needed to clear out the closet and make space for new things.
Scripture tells us not to remember the former things or dwell on the past (Isaiah 43:18). Clearing out the closet made me reflect: "Was I holding onto memories and habits that prevented me from pursuing the new things God planned for me?" I pray that the Lord helps me embrace the future He has prepared for me.
