"Why are you downcast, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil? Hope in God; for I shall again praise my God for the salvation that comes from Him" (Ps. 42:6*).
One of the first things I learned in Sunday school is that there's always a child who cries for their parents. Every Sunday, at least one child bursts into tears after the people who make them feel secure leave the room.
I carefully explain to each child that their parents are nearby, and they brought them here to help them learn something. This does not mean they have abandoned them or that they will be apart for a long time. Then, when a specific challenge brings confusion into my world and leaves me feeling helpless, I understand how the children feel. Looking back, I ask myself: "Why was I afraid? Why was life so difficult? Why did I feel lonely?" The Lord was nearby, watching over me, but also allowing me to learn and build my character.
Now, when a difficulty makes me feel like God is far away, I think of those upset children during Sunday school. Then, with renewed confidence, I remind myself: "God is near."
