In the Storm

In the Storm
In the Storm

“Then a great storm arose, and the waves began to flood the boat so that it was already filling. But Jesus was sleeping on a cushion in the stern” (Mark 4:37-38*).

I was sitting alone at the kitchen table with an empty tissue box. I've been a Christian for years, but in that moment, my heart doubted what my mind knew. If God loved me, why was this happening to me?

As I thought about my own storm, I remembered another—an ominous one—from two thousand years ago on the Sea of Galilee. I realized it was not just a story about a storm, but also a story about trust. The disciples follow their Lord, and yet, the storm comes. They cry out to Him and ask a question that I often do: "Teacher, do you not care? (v. 38*)".

Storms can make us doubt God’s care for us. We pray for healing, protection, restoration—basically, for the storm to pass. Such prayers are not wrong. But we must learn to value God’s presence during trials more than deliverance from the trial.

Christ calms the storm on the Sea of Galilee. Sometimes He does not calm our storms but leads us through them. When doubt arises, let us remember that the Lord Jesus is with us in the storm.
