“But Jesus said: 'Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.' ” (Mt. 19:14*).
My daughter works in a kindergarten, where she provides special care for a little boy whose brain was damaged at birth. He is fed through a nasal tube, cannot walk, nor communicate with the other children at the kindergarten. My daughter helps maintain his medical equipment and takes care of his health and comfort.
In the afternoons, when the weather is suitable, she takes the child to the playground. Once, she noticed two children arguing over a toy, and the child who won the argument came over and gave the toy to the sick child. Another time, a little girl approached with her favorite picture book and read to him, even though the boy couldn't understand her. Many children came to him, kindly saying: “Let's play!”
My daughter's stories about these children always come to mind when I reflect on today's verse from Scripture, which tells us we must “become like little children.” They are the ones unaffected by circumstances, unconcerned with how others see them, and capable of giving selflessly and offering help without expecting anything in return.
