“Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand.” (Job 38:4*)
I know the basic principle at work when I put a dish of food in the microwave – atoms and energy create waves that vibrate to heat my food – but I can't claim to fully understand the complex science behind it. And yet, this lack of knowledge doesn't prevent me from using the microwave. I simply enjoy that my food heats up quickly.
In a similar way, I do not understand the mysteries of God, but the lack of knowledge does not stop me from trusting in God. In Job 38:1-7, the Lord presents a series of questions to Job regarding the complexity of creation. Like Job, I do not understand how the Lord created our world. I do not understand how exactly my faith in Christ provides me with a personal relationship with an invisible God. I do not understand how the Holy Spirit intervenes in my life, bringing lasting peace through the Word and prayer. As Apostle Paul says, now we see things dimly, as in a vague reflection in a mirror, but one day we will understand (see 1 Cor. 13:12).
I don't need to understand to know that it is so. What surrounds me contains countless mysteries that point me to God's greatness. Regardless of our incomplete understanding, spiritual life is born and nourished by faith.
