„Jesus told them: “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He and I do nothing on My own but speak just what the Father has taught Me. The One who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do what pleases Him.” While He was speaking these things, many believed in Him. Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed Him: “If you continue in My teaching, you are truly My disciples and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John, ch. 8, vs. 28 – 32*).
The Pharisees rejected the Lord Jesus, even though He spoke the truth. But there were others who listened and believed, as we see in today’s biblical passage. To them, the Lord said: “If you continue in My teaching … you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (vs. 31 – 32*). However, many thought He was offering freedom from Roman oppression or even from life's problems. But that’s not what Christ meant. He offers freedom from sin.
When we believe the truth of the gospel and turn to the Savior for salvation, we are freed from the penalty of sin, which is eternal condemnation. But did you know that God’s truth also frees us from the power of sin in the present moment? Even if we continue to struggle with temptations after being saved, we already have Christ’s divine strength within us to resist and overcome.
Do you feel trapped in sinful behavior and desires? As Christ says, the key to freedom is abiding in God’s word. Fill your mind with His truth, and sin will lose its grip on you—today and forever.
