Showing love

Showing love
Showing love

“This is how we have recognized love: that Christ gave His life for us. And we ought to give our lives for our brothers. But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth!” (1 John, ch. 3, verses 16 – 18*).

As I was growing up, I had several Sunday school teachers, but Craig Stowe is the one I remember best. Several times a month, Mr. Stowe would stop on his way home when he saw me delivering newspapers. He would ask how I was and if I had any needs to pray for. And before he drove off, he would always buy a newspaper, paying five times its value.

These brief conversations with Mr. Stowe had a significant impact on my life. I knew he cared about me because he took the time to look me in the eye and ensure I was doing well. I strive to pass on this love, even if I only have a few minutes with any given person.

We believers are called to love one another “in deed and truth” (1 John, ch. 3, verse 18*). You can help change someone's life with simple acts of service and kindness – a hug, a conversation, a shared lunch. You don’t need to reach a large crowd, just allow the Lord to use you to show care for one person today, another tomorrow.

It takes just a little attention for someone to feel God’s love.
