Nothing can separate us

Nothing can separate us
Nothing can separate us

"He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all—will He not also with Him graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? No one, because it is God who justifies them! Who is he that condemns? No one, for Christ Jesus, who died, but more than that, was raised to life, is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. What shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: 'For Your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.’ But in all these things we triumph overwhelmingly through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:32-39*).

In Romans 8, Apostle Paul presents a compelling argument for believers regarding their eternal security, consisting of the following questions:

  • Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? The answer is simple: no one can bring a charge against a believer that will stand. Satan tries, but the Lord has already justified us through Christ—He has declared us innocent. If you fall into unbelief or sin, you may lose your reward, but you cannot lose eternity in heaven with God (2 Corinthians 3:12-15).
  • What shall separate us from the love of Christ? Undoubtedly, there are many experiences that test our faith, but we have secure salvation through God’s grace. The Lord Jesus understands our difficulties and doubts and does not intend to reject us at our first wrong step. God knows in advance that we will make thousands of wrongs even after we have accepted Christ and, nevertheless, He chose to save us.

Some followers of Christ worry that accepting the idea of our eternal security will motivate people to live sinfully, as they have nothing to lose. However, if we consider how wonderful and majestic our heavenly Father is, we realize that it makes much more sense for people to be challenged to glorify Him for saving them from their disobedience. The more we know Christ and His love for us, the more we will love Him and want to please Him.
