Lesson on Serving

Lesson on Serving
Lesson on Serving

“And the King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of Mine, you did for Me’ (Mt. 25:40*).

After a long day at work, I stopped by the store. I grabbed what I needed and lined up at the checkout where there were the fewest people. The man in front of me was holding a basket of groceries. I realized he was using food vouchers because he told the woman at the register that he only needed to pay for the soda. It seemed like the cashier was reviewing the food item list for an eternity. Eventually, she discovered that the vouchers did not cover the strawberries. The man asked her to check again. At that moment, I thought to myself, “How much longer do I have to wait?” Then, the person behind me said:

–       Give him the strawberries. I'll pay for everything.

The man with the vouchers turned to him:

–       Thank you! I’ve been homeless since yesterday.

I was ashamed of my selfish thoughts and lack of response. Why didn’t I act like this person and offer to pay for the man's groceries? This experience reminded me that we need to be compassionate and humble, always ready to serve others as Christ instructs us. The Lord will always give us opportunities to serve. We just need to stop thinking about ourselves and consider the person in front of us.
