"Take care not to neglect one of these little ones, for I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of My heavenly Father. For the Son of Man came to save what was lost" (Matt. 18:10-11).
"What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go to look for the one that wandered off?" Christ asks.
So, what do we think? If we had a hundred sheep and one of them got lost, I'm not sure that any of us would leave the others to go search for it. This single missing sheep would likely be considered an acceptable loss, one that would not visibly affect the budget.
In this passage, however, Christ makes it clear how valuable "these little ones" are to Him. He emphasizes that the person who seems valueless—the one we are inclined to overlook or for whom we do not particularly care—is precisely the one the Lord seeks out.
In other words, God's accounting doesn't look like ours—in His budget, there are no written off losses concerning "these little ones." No one is considered "collateral damage." This is good news, because He who watches over lost sheep and little sparrows does not lose sight of us either. But these words also contain a challenge, as the Lord also calls us to show compassion. Thank God, His grace is sufficient for us to be capable of this.
