When you don't know where you're going!

When you don't know where you're going!
When you don't know where you're going!

"By faith, Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going" (Hebrews 11:8*).

Abraham lived in Ur—a major city at the time—and moved to Haran with his entire household (Ur is modern-day Iran, and Haran is present-day Turkey). Abraham was thriving, and even if he wasn't seeking God's control in his life, the Lord sought him out to assign him a special task. This drastically changed Abraham's life (at that time he was named Abram, but God changed his name to Abraham, see Genesis 17:5).

In fact, what the Lord told him was: "Leave your country, culture, and people, and follow Me." This is not easy to do when you are 75 years old, successful, and settled, as was the case with Abraham. Moreover, the Lord doesn't give him a map to guide him. He merely tells him, "Go... to the land I will show you."

When it comes to God's call in our lives, we like to have clarity and details. We want a detailed description of where to go and what to do when we get there. However, the Lord seldom works this way. He wants to teach us to walk by faith in Him, not merely by sight. Not every call from God involves relocating, but it certainly includes leaving some part of our past behind and stepping into the unknown with the Lord, who will guide us.
