"The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. When a man finds it, he hides it again, and in his joy, he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field" (Matt., ch. 13, v. 14*).
Before, I didn't think I was particularly valuable to the Lord. I would think things like, "I don't look as good as so-and-so. I don't have such valuable abilities. I'm not good enough." Sometimes these thoughts start with something as trivial as not being invited to a certain event, which makes me feel rejected. Other times I find myself dwelling on hurtful words or actions directed against me.
Reflecting on today's passage from Matthew helped me see how the King of kings and the Lord of the Universe views me. In God's eyes, I am a treasure that brings Him joy. God believes that we are worth giving everything for. So when I think of the Lord Jesus Christ, who was born into our world and died on the cross, I see His sacrifice in light of this parable.
We understand how valuable something is by how much is paid for it. Jesus Christ gave everything for me on the cross. Therefore, no day of my life should I feel as though I have no worth. I am learning, when I look at myself, to say aloud: "I am valuable!"
