Idolatry is not part of the past, but it prevails today in various forms. Many religions worship false gods – some with real images, others without. Yet, idolatry is an act of the heart, so it is entirely possible for believers to sin in this way. That is why Apostle John says: "Little children, keep yourselves from idols" (1 John 5:21*).
If we value anything or anyone more than God, we are effectively committing idolatry. What we value the most is often seen by the amount of time we dedicate to it, the sacrifices we make, and the money we spend on it. Idols hinder our wholehearted dedication to God and deceive us into thinking that we will find satisfaction and fulfillment in them instead of in the Lord.
Attempts to rid our hearts of idols would be in vain until we learn to value God above all else and everyone. Idols are somewhat like the moles in a game where they pop out of various holes in the ground, and you must hit them with a mallet. But as soon as you remove one, another immediately appears. The key to overcoming idolatry is to develop a greater love and understanding of the one true God through His word. When He is the strongest desire of our soul, all other "gods" will be cast out of our hearts.
