"Aristarchus, who is imprisoned with me, greets you, as does Barnabas’s nephew, Mark, concerning whom you have received instructions—if he comes to you, welcome him—and Jesus, who is called Justus. They are circumcised and are the only fellow workers for the Kingdom of God, who have been a comfort to me. Your hometown fellow Epaphras greets you, a servant of Jesus Christ, who always prays fervently for you, that you may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God. I testify for him that he cares greatly for you and for those in Laodicea and Hierapolis. Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas greet you as well" (Colossians, ch. 4, verses 10–14*).
At first glance, the closing verses of the book of Colossians do not appear to have significant theological influence. Most of the people listed here, except for Luke and Mark, are unfamiliar. We could easily disregard these verses and skip directly to 1 Thessalonians. But they carry a subtle message that no ministry is insignificant.
Titus, for example, who is mentioned first, plays an incredible role—wherever he appears in Scripture, he is always performing tasks for the Apostle Paul (see Acts, ch. 20, verse 4; Ephesians, ch. 6, verse 21; 2 Timothy, ch. 4, verse 12). Thanks to him, the Epistle to the Colossians traveled 2,000 kilometers to its destination and was then passed from church to church to be read and copied repeatedly. Without this faithful helper of Paul, today's believers would not have this precious message.
We tend to label certain ministries as important or unimportant. Too often, pride prevents us from accepting a particular ministry. We want to do something grand and impressive to prove to everyone how much we love God. However, what He desires is quite the opposite. God wants our love to motivate us to accomplish everything He commands, regardless of how insignificant or unnoticeable it may seem.
Which task from God are you resisting? Confess your pride and humble yourself to accomplish what He wants from you. No work for the Lord is unimportant.
