In the book of Ezekiel, God says: "I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one" (Ezekiel 22:30*). This is true for us today as well – the eyes of the Lord roam the earth in search of righteous men and women who will act justly where they live.
The "gap" in this verse refers to a place where lies have infiltrated, causing disorder rooted in evil and inviting God's judgment. Sometimes these "gaps" are so severe that they bring entire nations to the brink of destruction. In fact, this is precisely what happened to Israel after the Exodus, but God's word notes this remarkable statement: "So He said He would destroy them— had not Moses, His chosen one, stood in the gap before Him to turn away His wrath lest He destroy them" (Psalm 106:23*).
Most of us are likely never going to be called upon to save an entire nation. However, we can still promote righteousness in our communities by speaking God’s words and standing against all that is wrong in our time. In the days of Moses, one man made a difference. Why not be the one to do the same today?
