Contentment is a trait that we can see in very few people nowadays. Our society constantly offers new items, devices, enhancements, and conveniences that promise pleasure, comfort, and satisfaction. However, no material things fulfill this promise in the long term. Nevertheless, many people continue to fall for lies instead of being content with what they have.
The book of Hebrews is written to people who are going through discouragement and persecution because of their faith in Christ. These believers are facing many difficulties, including public accusations, imprisonment, and confiscation of property: "You suffered along with me in my chains and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property" (Hebrews, ch.10, v. 34*). Yet, in verse 35 – 35* the author encourages them to persevere because they have a better and eternal possession awaiting them in heaven: “So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.”
They may not possess earthly wealth or conveniences, but in the Lord, they have everything they need – and He promises never to leave or forget them, regardless of what people on earth might do to them.
Most of us today have more material possessions and security than early believers, yet contentment eludes us. This is because the problem lies within the heart. We are attached to money and everything it provides us. So, while the Lord “richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment” (1 Timothy, ch. 6, v. 17*), true enjoyment is only possible when our hearts are oriented towards Him, not towards earthly things. He alone is our hope.
