"Jesus turned to him and asked, 'What do you want me to do for you?' The blind man said to Him, 'I want to see, Teacher!' (Mark, chapter 10, verse 51*).
Bartimaeus cries out to Jesus Christ for mercy. The question He poses might sound strange. Doesn't the Lord know that the man is blind?
He certainly does. But His question prompts Bartimaeus to consider and articulate what he truly needs.
Bartimaeus has probably been begging at the Jericho gate for a long time – perhaps years. He is used to asking everyone for money or bread. But in the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ, he has the opportunity to ask for sight – and by doing so, he essentially asks to regain his life.
What do you want from the Lord Jesus? Each of us could benefit from a little help or some service. Perhaps He could even fix one or two things in our lives, like broken relationships or financial debt. Undoubtedly, He can. There are countless things to ask for Christ's help with, but He invites us to be honest with ourselves and brave in His presence.
What we truly need is God's mercy and grace. We need to tell Him, 'Son of David, have mercy on me!' (Mark, chapter 10, verse 48*).
So, do it. Tell the Lord Jesus what you need, for that is why He walks the road to Jerusalem.
