Great is the Lord and worthy of praise, and His greatness is unsearchable (Ps. 145, verse 3*).
Where do you focus when difficulties arise - on the problem, its impact on you, or its effect on others?
When faced with trouble, David would ponder God's all-sufficiency and His good and perfect will. We see this focus not only in Psalm 145, but in many others: throughout his life, David presented his difficulties to God and invariably redirected his attention back to Him. As a result, his soul found strength and hope.
Because David had a trusting relationship with God, he faced trials by expecting help from above. The upcoming battle with Goliath, for example, reminded him of God's saving power in the past and present (1 Sam., ch. 17, verse 37). When he was subject to mortal threats and attacks from King Saul, David relied on God's protection, regarding Him as his "fortress and stronghold" (Ps. 18, verse 3). In times of mourning for close ones, he let God's presence and comfort fill his heart and mind (1 Sam., ch. 30, verses 3 - 6).
Like David, our circumstances can also lead us to reflection. God has given us His word, which reveals His character, deeds, and purposes. When the next difficulty in your life comes, use Scripture to remind you to reflect on some of God's attributes and draw strength and hope to sustain your soul at that moment.
