"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal, for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (Matt., ch. 6, v. 19 – 21)*.
My husband and I need to get rid of our excess possessions. We are moving to a smaller home, requiring us to donate or dispose of items from our current household. For me, this includes parting with an antique collection I gathered in the '90s with my brother Bob when we would go "treasure hunting." We had the task of uncovering relics from the past. Bob would rummage through shelves for childhood toys while I scoured boxes for old tin cans with images from "yesteryear." Bob passed away many years ago, and the antiques in our home remind me of those long-ago hunts. Now, however, it is time to say goodbye to them.
At that point in my life, collecting these treasures was a priority for me. Today, as I place them in a large box, the words of Christ from Matthew, chapter 6, come to mind.
Our earthly treasures, whether money, possessions, or antique collections, have no value in heaven. Instead, the Lord Jesus advises us to gather heavenly treasures. Glorifying God and obeying Him, seeking Him in the Scripture, supporting the church through tithes, talents, and time, praying for the needs of others, being kind and encouraging, sharing my faith—these are my spiritual treasures. They have value not only here but in my eternal home in heaven.
