"Because You have created me, You have formed me in my mother's womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful, and my soul knows it very well. My bones were not hidden from You when I was made in secret, formed in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body, all the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be" (Ps. 139:13-16*).
When God looks at the world He created, He declares it good. The creation of man in His own image is the pinnacle of His creative work (Gen. 1:27), and Psalm 139:14 reminds us that we are “fearfully and wonderfully” made. So wonderfully, that the Lord gives each one of His children immense potential to serve in His kingdom.
However, some of us doubt that this is true — we wonder, "How can I have incredible potential when I fail in so many ways?"
Remember some examples from Scripture. First, Moses, who grows up in Pharaoh's household with many advantages. Then he kills an Egyptian and flees. God sees beyond all that — He sees what Moses can become. Next, Saul of Tarsus zealously persecutes believers in the Lord Jesus. Yet by God's grace, he becomes the Apostle Paul — an evangelist who writes much of the New Testament. Finally, the Apostle Peter denies even knowing Christ. And still, the Lord chooses him to lead and care for His church.
The Lord sees the potential we have in Christ. Because we are made in His image and His Spirit lives in us, we have a greater possibility for transformation and service than we can ask for or imagine.
