Christ - Our Sacrifice

Christ - Our Sacrifice
Christ - Our Sacrifice

"The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, 'Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world' (John 1:29*).

The Scriptures present us with a variety of names for the Lord Jesus – Messiah, Lord, Christ, Teacher, but the one that is probably least known in today’s world is the Lamb of God. Most of us are not well acquainted with the history and culture of the Jewish people, so we might not fully understand this title. However, the ancient Israelites knew its meaning: a sacrificial lamb.

The Lord has always dealt with the sins of His people through sacrifices. For example, when Adam and Eve sinned, an animal was killed to cover their nakedness and shame (Genesis 3:21). Later, during the first Passover, the door of each house was covered with the blood of a sacrificial animal (Exodus 12:1-7). After that, a goat was sacrificed for the atonement of the whole nation (Leviticus 16:15). And in John 1:29, we see the final perfect sacrifice - the Lamb who takes away the sins of the world.

Just as innocent animals died instead of guilty people, so Christ gives His sinless life for sinful humanity. He assumes all responsibility and bears the punishment that we deserve. While hanging on the cross, God's judgment and wrath are poured out on Him, instead of on us.

Let us thank Him and praise Him for this gift.
