"Afterward, they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul, the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. And after removing him, He raised up David as their king, of whom He testified: 'I have found David, the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart. He will fulfill all My will.' (Acts 13:21-22*).
Have you ever seen gravestones with touching epitaphs like "devoted mother" or "beloved friend"? What would you like to be written on your gravestone? Which epitaph would summarize your life?
In the book of Acts, we see how history remembers King David. In a sermon mainly addressed to the Jews, the apostle Paul mentions David, who is well known to the audience. Recalling all the great achievements of the king during his reign, how does the apostle choose to describe him? He states that the Lord calls David "a man after His own heart" (Acts 13:22).
What does it mean to be a person after God's own heart? For David, this requires a close relationship with God (Psalms 63:1, 6-8), which is more than just a routine of mechanical prayer and church attendance. Rather, such closeness is based on the desire to draw near to God the Father (Psalms 42:1).
What is necessary to be described as people after God's own heart? What activities need to be removed from our lives? What needs to be added? Ask God to help you make these changes and commit to making this epitaph a goal of your life.
