“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” (Philippians, Chapter 4, Verse 8*).
There are days when nothing seems right and every place I go feels gloomy. I notice the dirt on the floor, the stains on the window glass, newly appeared gray hairs, and an endless list of stress factors. While driving, the traffic lights take too long, drivers are aggressive, and I need to watch out for potholes on the roads.
Reflecting on today’s Bible passage, I realize that the real problem is my focus. If I concentrate on what is wrong, I will see nothing else. However, if I direct my attention to everything that is just, pure, and good, that is what I will find. The world is full of both good and evil, and God tells us to fill our minds and hearts with the good. This way, peace will flow from us and point others to the Lord Jesus Christ.
Once we change our focus, we begin to discover the Lord in every part of creation. When I notice the wonderful aroma of coffee, the birds singing from the window, or the impressive colors of the sunrise, my problems fade into the background. I can take a pause in my busy day, take a deep breath, and remind myself of all the blessings in my life.
Let us focus on what is just, pure, and good as we observe the world around us today.
