“I tell you, get up, pick up your mat and go home!” (Mk. 2:11*).
“Get up!” – as if the alarm is calling us in the morning. Most of us do not like this sound because it marks the moment when we have to leave the soft, warm bed to get up and start a new workday with its responsibilities. And yet, we do it and begin the new day.
The Holy Gospels present several examples of how a command from Christ contains a prompt for movement. To the paralyzed man, carried by his friends and lowered from the roof, the Lord Jesus says: “Get up, pick up your mat and go home” (Mk. 2:11*). To the deceased daughter of Jairus, who is the synagogue leader, He says: “Girl, get up!” (Lk. 8:54*).
“Get up!” – what a strong motivation from our Savior. In all the Gospels, the Lord calls people to active service: “Go into all the world and preach” (Mk. 16:15*); “Let them have your cloak as well” (Mt. 5:40*); “Give to the one who asks you” (Mt. 5:42*); “Go, make disciples of all nations” (Mt. 28:19*). In whatever way we serve, the Lord promises to be with us on our journey. All we need to do is follow His command and rise.
